‘Throw’-Back Thursday - A Comeback From ACL Surgery
Using medicine balls to improve baseball specific power.
For this ‘Throw’-Back Thursday we will highlight a player who made a full recovery from ACL surgery. We also discuss how to improve your baseball specific power.
Henry suffered an ACL (knee ligament) tear as a 6th grader and underwent ACL reconstruction surgery. This rehab is no joke, and requires about a year of physical therapy. It is a physical and mental grind, even for professional athletes.
Henry came to MVP in the later stages of his rehab. He had regained full mobility and his lower body strength was close to being back to normal. But he was still missing the power and explosiveness to pitch and hit at 100%. We focused his rehab/training on baseball specific strength and power. A big piece of this training was the use of medicine balls to simulate hitting and pitching movements. Below is a link to 3 of the baseball specific medicine ball power exercises that we used with Henry.
Not only did Henry return at 100% for his summer baseball season, but he was DOMINANT, striking out 14 batters in 5 innings one game, and winning a State Championship. Henry is a talented player with an ELITE work ethic, but unfortunately also a Cubs fan. Baseball specific strength and power training is crucial in order to have a season like Henry did after an injury. If you’d like to incorporate similar exercises into your baseball training then let’s chat!
We appreciate you being a part of the MVP family!
