A Muscle Every Baseball Player Needs to Train!

This is what I call a “Demon Scapula”.

When it comes to arm care, injury prevention, and shoulder strengthening for baseball players there is one muscle that is absolutely KEY. It is the most under-trained muscle we see in baseball players. What is it?

Serratus Anterior.

The Serratus Anterior is a crucial scapula (shoulder blade) muscle. A strong Serratus Anterior muscle moves the shoulder blade into positions required to throw a baseball, which is why it is so important to strengthen. The picture above is what I like to call a “Demon Scapula”. The medical term for this would be a winging scapula, because as you can see it pops off the back and looks like a wing. The reason behind the winging scapula is often times a very weak Serratus Anterior muscle. Also, we do not recommend trying to fly if you do have winging scapulas….they don’t work like actual wings unfortunately.

So how do we strengthen this incredibly important muscle to help protect the throwing shoulder? The link below will provide you with 3 exercises focused on strengthening the serratus anterior. Check them out!

Technique is key for performing these exercises. If you’re unsure about technique, have other questions, or would like more information on strengthening the serratus anterior then let’s chat! Scapular strength and stability is crucial for shoulder health. And next time you stop by MVP, ask to see the full video of the “Demon Scapula”, it’s pretty wild.

We appreciate you being a part of the MVP family!
