Bob Ross, Ben, and Baseball — They All Relate
“Peaks and Valleys” - Return to Throwing Programs and Workload Management
Yes, I was once Bob Ross for Halloween. My fiancé Kelsey, was my painting. That night (5 years ago), we weren’t even planning on going out. But somehow, we ended up in a costume contest at the famous downtown hotel in Tucson, AZ. As we stood on stage, in front of hundreds, I held my paintbrush up in the air and the crowd went absolutely WILD. Who would have thought there were so many Bob Ross fans in Tucson? Ended up taking 2nd place in the contest.
How could I possibly relate Bob Ross to baseball? Here’s how…..
Bob Ross is famous for his paintings. Specifically, his ability to paint mountain peaks, and valleys. I often use the phrase “Peaks and Valleys” when we design return to throwing programs for baseball players after an injury. The “peaks” represent higher intensity throwing days. This could mean increased velocity or increased number of throws that day. The “valleys” are easy/recovery days, very light throwing with lower velocity and number of throws. This method allows the body to fully recover while continuing to build arm strength safely. It’s also what we call workload management, and can be applied to in-season throwing. It may be slightly different for each player, but the overall concept is that throughout each week of throwing/pitching we have high (peaks) and low (valleys) intensity throwing sessions.
At MVP Sports Rehab we use this method with each return to throwing program which are custom designed and guided by advanced technology. You will not find this at any other physical therapy clinic in the state. It’s a crucial element of baseball rehab to minimize set-backs and get back to 100%.
